Elizabeth Miller's Gold Award Project

Mission: to collect new and used small stuffed animals, dolls, toys, and coloring books

I decided to do this project in which I will gather used stuffed animals, dolls, small toys, coloring books etc. and send them with the next mission (Spring break 2002) to El Paso/ Ysleta, Texas and from there to Juarez, Mexico just across the border.

The toys will be sent to San Pablo Lutheran Church and the Ysleta Mission. They will see to it that children there and in Juarez receive a bit of happiness.

I chose this project after witnessing first hand the poverty and despair in both Texas and Mexico. Lutheran Campus Ministries at Faith Lutheran Church went on a mission trip for a week during Spring break, where we helped build a church by mixing concrete. We also had daily Bible studies and daily chapel. Sunday we had church in Spanish and English. At one point just after a Sunday school lesson the pastor’s wife brought out a large garbage bag full of used toys. The children, with obvious excitement lined up to receive whatever was in the bag. It was stuffed animals! The looks on their faces were priceless.

I have decided that seeing their faces again would be terrific and that is why I want to do this project.

Any contributions of money will be used to buy wheeled duffel bags to send the toys with the mission as an on-going resource for LCM and a small part of the money will be spent on candy or colored pencils so the children won’t eat the crayons.

My project for the Girl Scout Gold Award was July to September 2001, but the mission trip will be a semi-annual event.
